May Day is not a holiday. It is a day of strike and resistance, rooted in the struggles of Chicago in 1886, when workers demanded the eight-hour workday and were met with violence and death. Their uprising became a symbol of global labor movements. In Greece, in May 1936, tobacco workers in Thessaloniki rose up, demanding fair wages. The state’s response was brutal: hundreds were injured and 12 killed. Among them the 25-year-old Tasos Tousis. The image of his mother mourning over his lifeless body became the inspiration for Epitaphios, a poem by Yiannis Ritsos. In 1959, Mikis Theodorakis set Epitaphios to music, blending the full spectrum of Greek musical tradition — from art music to the popular folk style. This year, the Hellenic Post (ELTA) honours Theodorakis with a new stamp series. His art became the voice of the people — and their resistance to injustice.
